A Look at Xanthones and Mangosteen

Friday, June 05th, 2009 | Author: admin

A Look at Xanthones and MangosteenWe’ve all heard the news for years about how important it is to get the right amount of antioxidants in order to keep our bodies healthy and ward of disease. Now there’s a new classification of antioxidants called xanthones, first discovered in the mangosteen fruit, which are poised to be one of the biggest discoveries of modern science in terms of health benefits.

While the concept of antioxidants may seem even more confusing when adding in another aspect, xanthones are fairly easy to understand, given their clear-cut, scientifically-proven benefits.

What are Xanthones?

Technically put, xanthones are a set of chemical compounds that can be synthetically produced, but are more often found and more potent in their natural settings. Xanthones are powerful antioxidants in a family of phytonutrients.

To date, researchers have discovered and classified approximately 200 xanthones, 40 of which are found in the mangosteen fruit. As a matter of fact, xanthones were first discovered when scientists began studying the health benefits of mangosteen based on its traditional indigenous medical uses.

Research into the medicinal properties of xanthones found in the mangosteen began in the 1970s, and gradually picked up pace as scientists began finding more exciting nutritional properties. Between 1996 and 2005, an exponential amount of research has been done in regards to mangosteen and its xanthones, and even more studies are in the works.

A Look at Xanthones and MangosteenXanthones in Mangosteen

To recap, xanthones are powerful antioxidants, and out of the 200 xanthones known to science, 40 of them are found in mangosteen.

But what do the antioxidant properties of the xanthones in mangosteen do for you? Antioxidants function as a balance for free radicals in the body. Free radicals are potentially harmful, yet oftentimes natural substances in your body that, when left free reign, build up and cause diseases like cancer, heart disease, and more.

The xanthones function to travel through your body, literally mopping up the free radicals on their way, leaving your body cleaner and healthier than before.

Some of the most important xanthones found in mangosteen include:

Alpha-mangostin Beta-mangostin Gamma-mangostin Garcinone Garcinone A Garcinone C Garcinone D Mangostanol Gartanin

These, among other xanthones, have been touted by independent researchers to have properties to include antiinflammatory, anticonvulsant, antiallergic, antitumor, and antiplatelet, to name just a few.

Known Benefits of Xanthones

Scientific research has made it abundantly clear that no other fruit compares in its health benefits to mangosteen, due to its xanthones and other nutritional properties.

Helping to fight cancer is just one of the many properties that different xanthones perform. For instance, one study performed in Japan showed that the xanthone alpha-mangostin had apparent properties that suppressed the development of tumors. Another, performed in China, found the xanthone garcinone E to show significant anticancer effects in terms of liver, lung, and gastric cancer cells.

In addition, some xanthones have shown significant antimicrobial effects in terms of fighting MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus), which is a bacterial strain known for its tenacious resistance to pharmacologic antibiotics. One scientific study also showed that alpha-mangostin, beta-mangostin, and garcinone B to have pronounced inhibition effects on a strain of tuberculosis.

As if that isn’t enough, xanthones have also been scientifically proven to help lower LDL, the bad cholesterol, by protecting the LDL from coming into contact with free radicals, thus leaving it unable to oxidize and attach to arterial walls and cause atherosclerosis.

Taking into account the anticancer, antiinflammatory, antimicrobial, and cholesterol-lowering effects of the xanthones found in mangosteen, here is just a sampling of the other many benefits that science has either researched or is in the process of discovering:

Antiviral Helps lower blood pressure Helps fight fatigue Antidepressant Prevents stomach ulcers Aids with weight loss Antiaging Combats diarrhea Pain reducer Heart protective Analgesic Anti-parkinsonian and anti-Alzheimer Lowers fevers Builds immunity to disease Antiallergen Antifungal Antiparasitic

Indeed, even now some health practitioners are suggesting drinking mangosteen juice for relief to people who suffer from the following diseases:

Infections Skin ailments like psoriasis, seborrhea, or eczema Joint problems and arthritis Dementia Anxiety and depression Cancer Chronic pain Chronic fatigue syndrome Ulcers Diabetes

A Look at Xanthones and MangosteenThe Fruit with Xanthone Power

As time goes by, it’s becoming less and less uncanny how traditional and folk medicine seems to have a grasp on the nutritional properties of food better than modern science has in the past. Indeed, it seems in some cases, especially in that of the mangosteen, science is working to catch up.

The mangosteen fruit is believed to have originated in the Moluccas and the Sunda Islands. It’s been used for decades upon decades by people from Thailand, the Philippines, and China in folk medicine to treat dysentery, skin disorders like eczema, diarrhea and cystitis, among other ailments.

One of the reasons why mangosteen is only now gaining notoriety and popularity is because, for many years, direct importation of the fruit from other countries has been illegal, based on governmental regulations to help quarantine the Asian fruit fly. Unfortunately, the mangosteen tree doesn’t grow well in most or all climates in the United States, so attempts to grow the fruit here have been relatively unsuccessful.

However, as science has begun proving the unsurpassed medical value of the rare mangosteen fruit and its xanthones, juices and preserves are becoming more and more readily available.

In terms of taste, the mangosteen itself is considered one of the most exquisitely delicious fruits nature has to offer. Often called the “Queen of Fruits,” the taste of mangosteen is unique, but is often described as sweet and tangy with hints of pear, ripe strawberry, and grape.

After sampling mangosteen, it’s easy to see why this fruit is so popular in Thailand due to its taste. And after learning 1ff8 about the benefits of the xanthones found in mangosteen, it’s even more clear how nutritionally beneficial this amazing fruit is.

Mangosteen – Myth Or Miracle?

Thursday, June 04th, 2009 | Author: admin

Mangosteen - Myth Or Miracle? The mangosteen is a small purple colored fruit that contains several white fruit segments that have a delicious taste. The fruit is not legally available in the U.S.A. due to fresh fruit import regulations. The fruit’s rind has reportedly been used for centuries as a local folk medicine remedy. The rind was dried and a crude extract was made to treat a variety of ailments.

The purported health benefits of the fruit has not exactly been established by the western medical researchers. Researchers in Asia, however have performed decades of research on the fruit and these studies seem to show promising potential for this fruit. Right now, the western world has not conducted any significant clinical research involving humans. The general consensus is that the fruit warrants further studies to determine the potential beneficial properties. Some research abstracts have reported that the mangosteen could be used as treatments for a variety of diseases and conditions.

One current debate among people is whether the mangosteen fruit can be used as a natural dietary supplement. Products are available that incorporate the whole entire fruit – rind and all – to attempt to harness the beneficial properties of the xanthones. To date, over 40 unique xanthones have been identified in the fruit, and it is considered to be the most xanthone rich food on earth. Research is continuing to try to identify more xanthones in the fruit.

Most die-hard skeptics want actual clinical studies involving humans to see if scientific evidence can validate the use as a supplement. Others are comfortable using the product based on the research abstracts currently available. I firmly believe that human clinical studies are very near. This would seem to be the next logical step since some of the research done has shown some promising results with human diseases. If the mangosteen can provide health benefits, then those benefits come in the form of a food…a natural product that is not a drug.

Currently the interest in the mangosteen continues and some have already attempted to capitalize on cultivating the fruit. The market is there due to the taste, and the interest in the mangosteen as a naturally beneficial botanical may well keep the medical interest in this fruit alive and well.

Mangosteen Nutrition – Tasty and Wholesome

Wednesday, June 03rd, 2009 | Author: admin

Mangosteen Nutrition - Tasty and WholesomeRecently, researchers have found a new alternative medicine that has antioxidant, antifungal, antibacterial and antitumor activity. That is mangosteen, which is also called “queen of fruit” for its health benefits and delicious taste. Mangosteen grows mainly in Southeast Asia, therefore it is rather difficult to find fresh fruit on the markets. But nowadays many companies solve this problem by offering consumers different forms of mangosteen nutrition.

What is Mangosteen?

Ripe mangosteen looks like an orange. The fruit have the same size, density and bright red color. The peel of mangosteen is rather firm and contains specific substances, which protect the fruit from insects. A ripe mangosteen is easy to peel. One should be cautious with the juice as it contains pigmentary substances that are difficult to be washed off.

Without peel mangosteen looks like a tangerine, but its color is white. The quantity of cloves of a fruit coincides with quantity of petals on the flower. As a rule, there are 5 cloves. The pulp of fruit is soft, the taste is also typical for citrus plants, but it is sweeter – some people say that it reminds them of a peach. Besides, the fruit has lots of healing properties, which make mangosteen nutrition both useful and tasty.

Mangosteen Nutrition - Tasty and WholesomeForms of Mangosteen Nutrition

Today you may choose any way of mangosteen nutrition, according to your taste and preference. You may buy mangosteen fruit puree, which is made from fresh fruit, and just little water is added to it. There are also combined purees made from mangosteen and some other fruit.

You may prefer canned or frozen mangosteen fruit, fresh juice or using mangosteen extract. Besides that, mangosteen powder and juice concentrates are very popular. They contain neither preservatives nor imitation colors, but only transformed fresh fruit. Powder is usually added to the juice to make it “thicker” and to enrich it in xanthones – useful antioxidants that mangosteen contains.

Another way is Vemma – mangosteen nutrition program, developed by New Vision company. Due to its compound, based on mangosteen, aloe juice and green tea extract, this drink is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Such combination helps people to struggle against stresses, infection and many other things that weaken the state of immunity system.

In conclusion it should be said that mangosteen nutrition is an ideal decision for those people, who do not have enough time to take proper care of their health. And that may be said about all of us. So, if you got interested in improving your health with the help of mangosteen nutrition, you are welcome to order mangosteen products through the Internet or to buy then on the market.

Mangosteen Crop Shape Benefits

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 | Author: admin

The mangosteen is an exotic fruit that comes from Asia. The fruit has many health benefits and has been nicknamed “the queen of fruits” due to its delicious taste.

Mangosteen Crop Shape Benefits

An enormous amount of research has been done on the mangosteen fruit going back many years, in order to determine the benefits of this remarkable fruit. It contains an abundant amount of xanthones, which are very powerful antioxidants. There is a whole family of this antioxidant, and the most dynamic of these are found in the mangosteen. Xanthones are found in a few rain forest plants, but they are for the most part found in the mangosteen fruit, and over 40 have been identified.

The two most beneficial xanthones are known as Alpha Mangostin and Gamma Mangostin. These xanthones have been shown to have a variety of benefits, by supporting the immune system and are a natural antibitotic, antifungal, antiviral, and perhaps most importantly, anti-inflammatory.

Antioxidants help protect against free radicals. No matter how healthy a lifestyle we live, we are still exposed to free radicals from air, water and food pollutants. They also can be produced from infection and inflammation. Since we can’t avoid them taking antioxidants each day can help protect us from the ill effects they can cause. It is for this reason that many healthy people take supplements, including mangosteen each day. It’s far easier to address health challenges before they begin, with prevention, rather than after they have become apparent.

The mangosteen fruit has only recently become available in the United States, and is sold in Canada, although only at certain times of the year when the mangosteen is harvested, and it has sold for as much as 11 each! For this reason mangosteen supplementation is best taken in a juice form since it is readily available that way.

Mangosteen juice has become quite popular since it was first introduced in North America just a few years ago. When looking for a mangsoteen supplement it is important to get the whole fruit as it is in the rind where most of the health benefits are found. It’s also a good idea to check labels as some juices have water as their primary ingredient, or many contain sugar or other unnecessary additives.

Mangosteen juice is a health supplement a person can take each day without any adverse side effects, and because it is a food it is safe for young children as well, although it is always suggested you consult with a doctor if you have any allergies or medical condition.

Mangosteen May Help In Reversing High Cholesterol

Mangosteen May Help In Reversing High Cholesterol

Hamburgers, fries, pizzas, and fried chicken are among the foods we love to binge on. Fast-food joints serving them make it easier for us to give in to our cravings. As we grow older, we realize that we can no longer enjoy these gastronomic delights the way we used to, because we have to watch out for the cholesterol in our diet. Otherwise, we are put in the danger zone for several cardiovascular diseases it may lead us to.

What is Cholesterol?

Cholesterol is a waxy, fatty substance present in the body. Cholesterol is an essential part of life. They are an integral part of the cell membranes, take part in the manufacturing of hormones, break down carbohydrates and proteins, and produce bile.

Cholesterol is transported by lipoproteins in the blood stream. There are different kinds of lipoproteins with distinct functions:

High density lipoproteins (HDL)

They are also called the good cholesterol. They are stable and move easily through the blood. They carry cholesterol away from the arteries, back into the liver where they can be removed from the body. Diseases affecting the liver can affect the HDL from performing their beneficial roles.

Low density lipoproteins (LDL)

These are the bad guys (aka bad cholesterol). They are unstable and tend to stick to the arterial walls and are implicated in the process of plaque formation or atherosclerosis, which leads to various serious complications.

Very low density lipoproteins (VLDL)

These carry triglycerides and cholesterol, thus are considered to be harmful.    Intermediate-density lipoproteins
Similar to VLDLs, these also carry triglycerides and cholesterol.

Chylomicrons

These are very large particles that are rich in triglycerides. Triglycerides are the main constituents of vegetable oil and animal fats.

Cholesterol and Heart Disease

High cholesterol level is considered to be a risk factor for the development of heart diseases. It contributes to the process of atherosclerosis or plaque formation within the wall of the arteries. This leads to serious consequences when the blood supply to an organ is restricted, due to the blockage by the plaque.

In the process of atherosclerosis, cholesterol is brought to the site of injury to the arterial lining through LDL. It interacts with free radicals and become oxidized. The oxidized LDL releases toxins and stimulates the inflammation process further, which adds to the damage. It joins with white blood cells to form the lipid foam, which is later capped with calcium deposits that cause hardening.

The elasticity of the artery is lost, while the passage of blood is prevented by the plaque. When atherosclerosis progresses, the plaque may rupture, dislodging its contents to smaller arteries which can be completely occluded.

When an artery supplying the heart is affected, it can lead to heart attack which may ultimately cause death.

Who is Prone to Having High Cholesterol Levels?

Mangosteen May Help In Reversing High Cholesterol

If you are born to a family known to have high cholesterol levels, chances are, you are prone to inheriting the disease as well. But other factors play a role too. Older age, the presence of concomitant hypertension and diabetes, a high saturated fat diet, obesity, and lack of exercise could all increase your cholesterol levels.

The Wonders of Mangosteen

Mangosteen is an exotic fruit that grows in tropical countries. The mangosteen tree requires abundant moisture and warm environment throughout the year. It is predominantly found in Southeast Asia, in countries like Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India, Vietnam, and Malaysia. In Asia, it is regarded as the ‘queen of fruits.’

For more than a thousand years, it has been used as an herbal remedy for various ailments. Recent researches are finding more good things about mangosteen and how it can solve the many health problems we are facing.

Mangosteen is a round, purple colored fruit that has a fine tasting white soft pulp that somewhat melts in your mouth. The pericarp or rind, is the richest source of medicinal properties of the fruit.

Mangosteen May Help In Reversing High Cholesterol

The  pericarp is the puple hard outer shell of mangosteen measuring about half a centimetre thick. The purplish juice coming from it can stain your clothes, which is almost impossible to remove. This is the reason why mangosteen is banned from hotels in countries where this is available. Although the health benefits can also be found in the fruit pulp, it is lower in concentration compared to the amount that is highly concentrated in the pericarp.

Xanthones are substances found in mangosteen found to have powerful antioxidant effects. There are around 40 xanthones found in mangosteen known to help prevent damage to cells by free radicals, slow the process of aging, and protect the body against degenerative diseases.

How Does Mangosteen Help in Reversing High Cholesterol Levels?

Supplementation with mangosteen, coupled with regular exercise and healthy diet, are found to help lower the levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and bad cholesterol LDL (low-density lipoprotein), while raising the good cholesterol.

Scientific research studies have revealed that gamma mangostin , a xanthone found in mangosteen, is a powerful antioxidant that showed more potent activities than vitamin E. It prevents the oxidation of bad cholesterol or LDL, which is responsible for clogging the arteries, leading to serious cardiovascular consequences.

The cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme (COX-2) which is linked to the inflammatory process, is known to be inhibited by gamma mangostin. Low level inflammation is often associated with high cholesterol levels.

Polyphenols, also present in mangosteen, were discovered to be five times more potent than vitamin C as to its antioxidant properties.

Choosing

Between the juice and capsule form of mangosteen, choose the latter because it will provide you with the maximum benefits you are after. While the juice form is great-tasting, it only contains a little percentage of mangosteen (the main ingredient) because it has to be mixed with other fruit extracts and preservatives. The capsule form comes in 100% mangosteen.

The juice form makes use of both the pericarp and the pulp, while the capsule form uses only the pericarp, where the xanthones are richest. Although the juice appears to maximize the xanthones in both pericarp and pulp, the processes it has to go through, to manufacture the juice, destroys the innate healing properties in mangosteen.

Pasteurization has to be done to the juice form to slow down the growth of harmful microorganisms. While this protects you from infectious agents, it also kills the biologically active components in mangosteen needed to address your health concerns.

As required by law, the whole fruit that has to be brought in to the United States from other countries where it was grown, has to go through irradiation to kill potentially debilitating pests. The capsule form only uses the husk, where all the good stuffs are concentrated, thus doesn’t have to undergo irradiation. The idea of taking in foods that has been exposed to radiation is something you may want to think about. When it comes to your health, do not take any chances. Choose wisely.

Help Fight Free Radicals with Mangosteen

Mangosteen has been a big word in the herbal supplement arena for quite some time the reason for this is the Xanthone Flavonoids and other compounds in Mangosteen fruit are responsible for its high level of antioxidant activity. In vitro tests have been conducted on XanoMaxtm Mangosteen 10% extract to determine the level of free radical scavenging ability in both watery and fatty environments. A major test recognized as the industry standard for measuring antioxidant activity is known as the ORAC (Oxygen Radical) assay. The ORAC test is an in vitro assay that works by measuring the amount of free radical damage done to a fluorescent probe (measured by a change in probe intensity). Antioxidants lessen the damage to the probe fluorescence, which indicates a reduction in free radical damage. This measure is used to quantify the antioxidant’s (or combination of antioxidants) capacity to quench free radicals. This quantification is known as the total ORAC value. The total ORAC value provides a relative measure of total antioxidant strength of any substance, allowing for comparison of different mixtures. A high ORAC value corresponds to a high total in vitro antioxidant capacity. The development of the ORAC test has led to a number of commonly eaten foods being assessed in terms of total ORAC scores per serving. Similarly, particular combinations of antioxidants, such as those in nutritional formulas, can also be assessed for their total ORAC scores.

Help Fight Free Radicals with MangosteenThis has led to the ability to determine the potential usefulness of a particular supplement in increasing overall antioxidant capacity. When XanoMaxtm Mangosteen 10% extract was tested for ORAC value, the resulting antioxidant potential was over 3,500 ORAC units per gram of extract. This result is extremely high. ORAC values of compounds vary with their nutrient concentration, moisture content and other factors. For comparison purposes, whole blueberries, considered to be a rich source of antioxidants, had an ORAC value of 61 units per gram, while pomegranate tested at 105 ORAC units per gram.1 XanoMaxtm Mangosteen extract scoring at 3,500 ORAC units is a potentially rich source of beneficial antioxidants to the body.

Free radicals are produced every day in the human body and an over abundance of free radicals can damage cells. If enough cells get damaged one can get cancer, organ damage and pre mature aging. Some say that free radicals speed up the aging process and taking supplements that have a high ORAC can help slow down the aging process and help us look younger and live longer. There are many vitamins and herbs on the market today that help fight free radical damage in the body, Mangosteen just happens to have one of the highest ORAC value for your money, give it a try and see how you feel. These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. Whole Mangosteen Fruit

Having originated in Southeast Asia, the whole mangosteen fruit has been revered for its taste, but also for its healing properties. Historically, the whole fruit was used to treat people both topically and internally. This was done by either grinding the rind down and applying it directly to the skin or steeping it in water overnight and then drinking the resulting mangosteen tea. It has been used to restore intestinal health for centuries, as well as treat other infections.

Documented internal and external use:

In the book Fruits of Warm Climates, Dr. Morton calls particular attention to the importance mangosteen rind in traditional preparations. She recorded that the mangosteen rind was sliced, dried, powdered and then administered. Often times it was first made into an ointment and then applied topically on skin disorders. Additionally, she states ‘the rind decoction is applied externally as an astringent lotion.’ Dr. Morton also makes mention of internal uses of the rind. ‘A portion of the rind is steeped in water overnight and the infusion given as a remedy.’

On May 26, 1885 The Illustrated London News reported that ‘Dr Garcin says the mangosteen is the only fruit which sick people are allowed to eat unsparingly; it is given with safety in almost every disorder.’

Modern science is only now beginning to understand and explain why the rind of the mangosteen fruit has been so revered for centuries. However, we know this: to benefit from the complete power and nutritional impact of the mangosteen fruit, it should be consumed just as it has been for more than a thousand yearsin its whole fruit form.

As early as 1933, studies were conducted to compare the whole fruit to single compound extracts taken from the rind. In 1933, Caius and Mhaskar found that the whole fruit offered more than 60% success rates in boosting and restoring intestinal health. In short, consumption of the whole mangosteen rind delivers benefits far superior to chemical extracts from that same rind.

Whole Mangosteen Fruit

On-going research continues to find valuable properties and several active phytochemicals have already been identified in the fruit, including:

39 Different Xanthones – These powerful phytonutrients demonstrate unique  and valuable health properties.

Catechins – The mangosteen rind has been shown to have the same level of this active ingredient as found in green tea.

Proanthocyanidins – The same benefit touted in grapeseed extract, proanthocyanidins are found in efficacious amounts in the whole mangosteen fruit.

While scientific researchers are still working to demonstrate how these phytochemicals work together synergistically, the phytonutrients found in the whole fruit are among the most studied, touted and beneficial in existence today. This much is certain: extracts can never match the incredible spectrum of benefits available in the honored mangosteen fruit. Dozens of studies demonstrate the incredibly beneficial properties of the mangosteen fruit. Among the most important benefits:

Sustains a healthy cardiovascular system*

The cardiovascular system (or circulatory system) includes the heart, the blood and blood vessels. The importance of maintaining a healthy cardiovascular system cannot be overstated. Because of poor diet and nutrition heart conditions are the number one cause of death and disability in the United States and most European countries.

Supports cartilage and joint function*

Cartilage is a dense connective tissue found in the joints, the rib cage, the ear and the nose. The knee joint, one of the most complex in the body, is more likely to be injured than is any other joint.

Strengthens the immune system*

Inflammation is one of the first responses of the immune system to infection. Symptoms will usually include a redness or swelling, both caused by an increase in blood flow.

Promotes a healthy seasonal respiratory system*

The respiratory tract is a common site for infections. Upper respiratory tract infections are one of the most common infections in the world, accounting for one billion illnesses in the United States annually.

Maintains intestinal health*

The gastrointestinal tractconsisting of the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach and small and large intestinesis a prominent part of the immune system. Gastroenteritis is inflammation of the intestines and is the most common disease of the intestines.

Neutralizes free radicals*

Large molecules with powerful antioxidant properties, like xanthones, may stabilize free radicals. Left uncontrolled, free radicals can damage cells, tissue or DNA.

Whole Mangosteen fruit

Mangosteen seeds are germinate as soon as they are removed from the fruit and die quickly if allowed to dry. So the seeds must be kept moist to remain viable until germination.

About Mangosteen Fruit

Many people like to consume mangosteen fruit because of its health benefits. Let’s study about the fruit itself a little bit. Mangosteen is believed to be originated from the Southeast Asia.

Should I Eat or Drink it?

Probably the best way to enjoy the benefits of the Mangosteen fruit is to drink it as a juice. Drinking the mangosteen juice maybe even healthier then eating the whole fruit by itself because the juice is made from the whole fef fruit.
