Mangosteen fruit, like many other exotic fruits, has a long history. So long, in fact, that its location of origin is not known. While this Asian fruit is grown primaily in Thailand, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam, India, as well as several other countries, mangosteen is believed to have first been cultivated in the Moluccas and the Sunda Islands.

Mangosteen is often referred to as the “Queen of Fruit.” According to legend, this desirable fruit was highly prized by Queen Victoria, who offered a cash reward to anyone bringing her the fruit. Under other lore, the Queen conferred knighthood upon the deliverer.

Even before Queen Victoria, scribes in Southeast Asia record the use of mangosteen as a general health remedy as far back as 600 A.D.

European explorers traveling Southeast Asia learned of the fruit’s folklore. They discovered that the rind, after being sliced and dried, was ground into a powder. The powder was then used as a topical herbal ointment. The rind was also steeped in water and consumed as a tea.
